First Aid at Work
What's this course for?
The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, place a general duty on employers to ensure that there is adequate First Aid provision for their employees should they become ill or suffer injury at work. This course is designed to meet these requirements.
How do i decide if we need this course?
You MUST complete a First Aid needs risk assessment, if you identify an area of higher risk in your workplace/job description this will be the course needed to meet the HSE requirements
Who should attend?
The selection of employees who will be trained as First Aiders must consider an individuals:
Reliability, disposition and communication skills
Aptitude and ability to absorb new knowledge and learn new skills
Ability to cope with stressful and physically demanding emergency procedures
That they could leave their duties immediately to respond to an emergency in the workplace
What's in the syllabus?
This course involves a minimum for 18 hours contact teaching time and is normally run over three consecutive days. Students will be trained in the procedures, safety requirements and management skills for First Aid.
No previous experience or knowledge is required to attend this course.
Students will learn how to:

Manage emergency situations, safety and promptly
Use First Aid equipment
Understand the duties of employers and the legal framework
Maintain simple factual records
Recognise the importance of personal hygiene in First Aid procedures
Manage the transportation of the casualty as required
Recognise and manage a range of major injuries and illnesses
Recognise and manage a range of minor injuries and illnesses
Perform effective Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

Is there an exam?
Yes
The course is externally assessed this consists of:
Practical CPR assessment and casualty management skills
First Aid scenarios
Theory test (multiple choice question paper)

The HSE "strongly recommends" annual training for First Aiders following qualification. This can be arranged and staff recalled for those wishing to comply with the recommendation.

First Aid at Work re-qualification
What's this course for?
The Health and Safety (First Aid) Regulations 1981, place a general duty on employers to ensure that there is adequate First Aid provision for their employees should they become ill or suffer injury at work. This course is designed to meet these requirements.
Who should attend?
Those who currently hold a valid three day First Aid at Work qualification who are required to re-validate their certificate
What's in the syllabus?
This course involves a minimum for 12 hours contact teaching time and is normally run over two days. Students will have their knowledge and skills refreshed in the procedures, safety requirements and management skills for First Aid.
Students will recap:
- Manage emergency situations, safety and promptly
- Use First Aid equipment
- Understand the duties of employers and the legal framework
- Maintain simple factual records
- Recognise the importance of personal hygiene in First Aid procedures
- Manage the transportation of the casualty as required
- Recognise and manage a range of major injuries and illnesses
- Recognise and manage a range of minor injuries and illnesses
- Perform effective Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation

skills update sessions 3 hours
What's this course for?
This course allow First Aiders to maintain their skills, increase confidence and network with other First Aiders. It is "strongly recommended" by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) that First Aiders update their skills at least once every year during the three year qualification period. This is not a re qualification course.

NO this course is continuously assessed by the trainer
